In the early morning hours of July 26, 2019, a heated argument between two brothers in Church Point, Louisiana, ended in a tragic death. Joseph 'Joe' Moore, a 68-year-old male, was fatally shot in the chest inside the residence he shared with his brother. Joseph, who was confined to a wheelchair due to a prior leg amputation, was pronounced dead at the scene despite the efforts of paramedics who responded to a call for an ambulance at the North Franques Street home around 4 a.m.
Responding officers from the Church Point Police Department found Joseph Moore with a single gunshot wound. The investigation quickly pointed to his younger brother, 65-year-old Elvin Moore, as the suspected shooter. Investigators determined that a verbal dispute between the siblings escalated, leading to the fatal shooting. A. 22 caliber rifle, believed to be the weapon used in the incident, was recovered at their shared home.
Elvin Moore was arrested at the scene and taken into custody by the Church Point Police. He was subsequently booked on a charge of second-degree murder and transported to the Acadia Parish Jail, where he was held on a $300,000 bond. In October 2020, Elvin Moore pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter in a 15th Judicial District courtroom. He had been incarcerated since his arrest in July of the previous year and was scheduled for sentencing in February 2021.
