On a Thursday evening in New Orleans, September 10, 2020, the life of 17-year-old Frank A. Bedell III was tragically cut short by gun violence. Frank, along with two other young men, Haushon Kareem Miller Jr., 19, and Khalil Ausbia Allen, 19, were fatally shot outside a home in the Gentilly neighborhood. The group had gathered at the residence, where one of the occupants had a music studio, to record music.
As the guests were leaving the home, gunfire erupted.
A woman who lived at the residence reported hearing about a dozen gunshots. She recalled that it sounded as if at least one of the individuals leaving the house returned fire. In the aftermath of the shooting, one of the young men was found deceased on her porch. In total, the incident left three young men dead and two other individuals, a man and a woman, wounded.
The New Orleans Police Department investigated the quintuple shooting, and their efforts led to the arrest of a 15-year-old male. The teenage suspect, whose name has not been publicly released due to his age, was initially taken into custody on a gun charge after he was seen fleeing the scene of the crime. He now faces three counts of second-degree murder for the deaths of Frank Bedell, Haushon Miller, and Khalil Allen, as well as attempted murder charges for the two surviving victims.
Another individual, 19-year-old Maurice Lumar, was arrested with the 15-year-old on weapons charges. However, authorities have not named Lumar as a suspect in the killings. The community was left to mourn the loss of the three young lives, with many expressing their grief and condolences for the families affected by this senseless act of violence. Frank's family remembered him as 'La Frank 5' and held a funeral service for him later that month.
