In the autumn of 2020, the life of Schuyler Bedford, a 35-year-old Black / African American male, was tragically cut short in Covington, Louisiana. On the evening of Friday, October 2nd, reports of gunshots near the intersection of North Columbia Street and West 33rd Avenue prompted a response from the Covington Police Department. Upon their arrival, officers found evidence of a shooting, with gunfire marks visible on vehicles in the vicinity. However, there was no victim at the scene.
It was later discovered that Bedford had been shot during the incident. Gravely wounded, he managed to make his way to his girlfriend's residence in the nearby city of Mandeville. It was there that he ultimately succumbed to his injuries on Saturday, October 3, 2020. The St. Tammany Parish Coroner's Office later officially identified him as the victim of the shooting.
The investigation into the homicide was swiftly taken over by the Criminal Investigations Division of the Covington Police Department. Their efforts soon led them to identify a suspect: 35-year-old Jonathan Lee Richardson of Covington. A warrant was issued for Richardson's arrest on a charge of second-degree murder.
The search for Richardson came to a peaceful end when he voluntarily turned himself in to the authorities on the evening of Sunday, October 4th. He was taken into custody and booked on charges of second-degree murder and illegal carrying of a weapon.
