In the early morning hours of July 4, 2021, the sounds of what neighbors mistook for holiday fireworks shattered the pre-dawn quiet on North 11th Street in Ponchatoula, Louisiana. It wasn't until later that morning that the tragic reality of those noises became horrifically clear. A family member discovered the lifeless body of 69-year-old Harry Hughes in his bed.
The man, a male resident of the community, had been fatally wounded in what authorities have described as an apparent drive-by shooting.
The initial investigation by the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office suggested that the gunshots heard by neighbors around 3:00 a.m. were the cause of Hughes's untimely death. Found inside his own home, it appeared that Hughes was killed while he was sleeping. The senseless act of violence left his family and the local community in shock and searching for answers. The case is being investigated as a homicide, and as of now, the perpetrators remain at large.
In an effort to bring justice for Harry Hughes, the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office has reached out to the public for assistance. A $5,000 reward has been offered for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for his murder.
