In the quiet town of Melville, Louisiana, a young man's life was cut short in a tragic act of violence. Wade Shaquille Vaughns-Smith, a 20-year-old male, was killed on February 15, 2022. The events of that evening unfolded with a chilling sequence of calls to the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office, first reporting gunshots and then a vehicle engulfed in flames in the same vicinity.
When deputies arrived at the scene on Highway 105, they discovered the burning vehicle and found Vaughns-Smith unresponsive. Another victim, James Preston Allen Vaughn, was also found near the vehicle with injuries and was transported to a local hospital. The investigation into the incident quickly pointed to a motive of jealousy. Vaughns-Smith and Vaughn were regular customers at a gas station where the girlfriend of one of the suspects worked. Their friendly interactions with her reportedly angered her jealous boyfriend.
The investigation led to the arrests of two individuals in connection with the crime. Jaden Michael Ardoin, 18 years old at the time, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder. A second suspect, Jaiman Maurice Mason, was also taken into custody. Mason was charged as a principal to the crime for allegedly being with Ardoin before and after the incident and for not reporting the murder.
