Herman Barnickol, a 40-year-old white male, served as the Sheriff of St. Clair County, Illinois. On January 13, 1900, he was involved in a tragic incident at the St. Clair County Jail in Swansea, IL. During an escape attempt by nine prisoners, Sheriff Barnickol was shot and mortally wounded. The prisoners overpowered the jailor, and one of them seized the jailor's revolver, shooting Sheriff Barnickol in the arm as he intervened. Despite his injury, Sheriff Barnickol managed to return fire, killing the suspect who shot him.
Following the incident, Sheriff Barnickol's condition worsened due to complications from the gunshot wound. Two weeks later, his left arm had to be amputated just below the shoulder due to infection. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries and died five hours after the surgery on January 27, 1900. His death was a significant loss to the community and his family, which included his wife, mother, seven brothers, and four sisters.
The aftermath of Sheriff Barnickol's death saw a thorough investigation and subsequent legal actions. On April 21, 1900, six of the prisoners involved in the escape attempt were found guilty of his murder. One prisoner received an 18-year prison sentence, while the other five were sentenced to 14 years each. This case highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement officers and the severe consequences for those who commit violent acts against them.
Sheriff Barnickol's bravery and dedication to his duty were commemorated by the community and his colleagues. He had served with the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department for five years, two of which were as Sheriff. His legacy continues to be honored, and he is remembered for his sacrifice and service. Sheriff Barnickol is buried in Walnut Hill Cemetery in Belleville, St. Clair County, where his memory is preserved by those who knew and respected him.
