Herman Barnickol, a 40-year-old white male, served as the Sheriff of St. Clair County, Illinois. On January 13, 1900, he was involved in a tragic incident at the St. Clair County Jail in Swansea, IL. During an escape attempt by nine prisoners, Sheriff Barnickol was shot and mortally wounded.
