Herman Barnickol, a 40-year-old white male, served as the Sheriff of St. Clair County, Illinois. On January 13, 1900, he was involved in a tragic incident at the St. Clair County Jail in Swansea, IL. During an escape attempt by nine prisoners, Sheriff Barnickol was shot and mortally wounded. The prisoners overpowered the jailor, and one of them seized the jailor's revolver, shooting Sheriff Barnickol in the arm as he intervened.
