W.E. Dump

Marshal W. E. 'Dump' Oakes, a 33-year-old white male, served as the City Marshal in Metropolis, Illinois. On June 3, 1901, he succumbed to gunshot wounds he had sustained nearly four weeks earlier. The incident occurred when Marshal Oakes confronted a hotel and saloon keeper on Front Street, instructing him to remove a lewd woman from his establishment.
