Constable Albert E. Wood, aged 33, was shot and killed on April 28, 1904, in Fairington Township, Illinois. Wood, who served in the Wayne County Constable's Office, was escorting a prisoner to jail when the prisoner's brother confronted them and demanded the prisoner's release. When Wood refused, the brother opened fire, killing Wood and wounding the other constable. The shooter was later convicted of murder and sentenced to 18 years in prison. He was paroled on February 5, 1915.
