Barrett, who served as a patrolman with the Peoria Police Department, was responding to a burglary on N.E. Perry Avenue. The burglary involved the theft of several diamonds, prompting a swift response from law enforcement. While searching the neighborhood with other officers, Barrett encountered a suspect in an alley behind 711 Glendale Street. The suspect opened fire, striking Barrett in the head. Despite being rushed to St. Francis Hospital, Barrett succumbed to his injuries two hours later.
The incident led to a significant investigation and subsequent legal proceedings. A suspect was apprehended and charged with the murder of Patrolman Barrett. However, the trial concluded with the suspect being acquitted on February 28, 1908.
