On November 16, 1995, Debra Evans, a 28-year-old African American woman from Addison, Illinois, was tragically murdered in her apartment. Debra was nine months pregnant with her fourth child, whom she had planned to name Elijah. She was the mother of three children: 10-year-old Samantha, 8-year-old Joshua, and 19-month-old Jordan.
Debra's ex-boyfriend, Laverne Ward, along with his girlfriend, Jacqueline Williams, and her cousin, Fedell Caffey, broke into Debra's apartment.
Ward attempted to persuade Debra to accept $2,000 in exchange for her unborn baby, but when she refused, Caffey shot her. After shooting Debra, the trio also murdered her daughter Samantha and attempted to kill her other children. Joshua was kidnapped and later murdered, while Jordan was left alone in the apartment with his deceased mother and sister.
The investigation led to the arrest of Ward, Williams, and Caffey. They were charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder and aggravated kidnapping. During the trial, it was revealed that Williams had been pressuring Caffey to have a baby, specifically one with light skin. Williams had even faked a pregnancy and moved the due date multiple times.
Ultimately, all three were found guilty and sentenced to life in prison. The case drew significant media attention and highlighted issues of domestic violence and the extreme lengths some individuals might go to in their pursuit of parenthood.
