Do you know who murdered Jorge? On the evening of March 14, 2011, Jorge Luis Tavares, an 18-year-old African-American / Black male, was fatally shot on the porch of his mother's home in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston. The shooting occurred at approximately 10:47 p.m. at 19 Groom Street, near Uphams Corner. Responding officers discovered Tavares suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was quickly transported to Boston Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
Originally from Cape Verde, Tavares had moved to Boston as a teenager to join his family. He had recently left school to work at a local fast-food restaurant to help support his family financially. His death was particularly tragic as his family had just suffered the loss of his only brother in a car accident in Cape Verde the week prior.
Witnesses reported seeing a van speeding away from the scene immediately after the gunshots rang out. Despite the chaotic scene and the accounts of neighbors, no arrests have ever been made in connection with the murder. The Boston Police Department's Homicide Unit continues to investigate the case, which remains one of the city's unsolved homicides from 2011. Authorities have periodically appealed to the public for any information that might lead to a breakthrough in the case.
