Patrick Boswell, a 14-year-old white male, tragically lost his life on January 2, 2015, in Rosemont, Illinois. Patrick, an eighth-grade student at Iroquois Community School in Des Plaines, was known for his love of animals, football, and his mechanical skills. On the night of his death, Patrick was found lying in an easement between two residential buildings, having suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head.
This incident marked Rosemont's first homicide in a decade.
The investigation revealed that Patrick's death was the result of a gang-related shooting. Cesar Garay, a 20-year-old man from Rosemont, was identified as the shooter. Garay fired into a group of people that included rival gang members, and Patrick, who was not involved in gang activities, was caught in the crossfire. Garay was later arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
In a court hearing, Garay pleaded guilty to the murder of Patrick Boswell. He accepted a plea deal that resulted in a 28-year prison sentence without the possibility of early parole. Patrick's mother, Patricia Frontain, expressed relief at the plea deal, which spared the family the trauma of a trial. She has since become an advocate against gun violence, founding the organization "Patrick Lives On... To End Gun Violence" in her son's memory.
The case highlighted the dangers of gang violence and its impact on innocent lives. Despite the tragic circumstances, Patrick's family and community have worked to honor his memory and raise awareness about the consequences of such violence.
