Gaillen Baker, a 13-year-old African American boy from Rockford, Illinois, tragically lost his life on September 18, 2015. Gaillen was an 8th grader at Eisenhower Middle School, known for his love of basketball and his playful nature with friends and family. On the day of his death, Gaillen was shot and killed while allegedly attempting to break into a home located in the 2300 block of 15th Avenue in Rockford.
The Winnebago County Coroner's Office confirmed that Gaillen died from a gunshot wound to the head.
The homeowner, Alonha Mack, was arrested in connection with the shooting. Mack, a convicted felon, did not possess a valid Firearm Owner's Identification (FOID) card. She fired at least one shot at Gaillen, leading to his death. Mack faced charges of Unlawful Use of a Weapon and was held in the Winnebago County Jail on a $100,000 bond. The investigation revealed that Gaillen was with a group of individuals at the time of the incident, but his accomplices managed to flee the scene.
In the aftermath of Gaillen's death, his friends and family expressed their grief and disbelief. They described him as a good kid who had fallen in with the wrong crowd. Gaillen's best friend, Deszeron Shaw, insisted that Gaillen did not need to steal, as his mother worked hard to provide for him. The community mourned his loss, with teddy bears, flowers, and cards placed at the site of the shooting in his memory.
The legal proceedings following Gaillen's death included Mack's court appearances and the ongoing investigation by the Rockford Police Department. Additionally, a 30-year-old Rockford woman faced charges for lying to the police about the circumstances surrounding Gaillen's death.
