Black male Lamont Alexander, age 23, was killed on December 4, 2015, on the 4100 block of West 21st Street in Chicago's North Lawndale neighborhood after a street confrontation in the late afternoon.
According to authorities, a dispute unfolded shortly before 4 p.m., and witnesses described a struggle that began in the street.
Alexander, a 23-year-old man who lived on the same block, was pronounced dead at 4:24 p.m. at the scene.
Prosecutors said the confrontation started after Alonzo Redditt, then 21, received a phone call alleging his sister had been beaten by her boyfriend, identified as Lamont Alexander.
Redditt went to the block to confront him, a fight broke out, and another male briefly grabbed Alexander from behind as tempers flared.
In the chaos that followed, Redditt produced a handgun, struck Alexander during the struggle, and then opened fire.
After the shooting, Redditt fled on foot, grabbing the magazine before being picked up by a car about a block away, according to charging statements.
The other man who had intervened remained at the scene and spoke with police, and additional witnesses provided a description that helped identify the shooter.
Investigators later confirmed the time of death and ruled the case a homicide.
Nearly a year after the killing, authorities announced an arrest: Alonzo Redditt was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Lamont Alexander, age 23.
At a bond hearing, a Cook County judge ordered Redditt held on $350,000 bond, and court records noted a follow-up court date later in December.
Public memorial records also list Alexander, age 23, as lost to gun violence that day in Chicago.
