Jeremy H. Ray, a 27-year-old man from Chicago, Illinois, was tragically shot to death on June 10, 2016. The incident occurred following an altercation during a dice game in the South Chicago neighborhood. According to court records and the Cook County medical examiner’s office, Ray and another individual, Shaqir Mustapha, were involved in a heated argument during the game.
Ray, who was identified as a resident of the Far South Side Mount Greenwood neighborhood, pulled out a gun and pistol-whipped Mustapha. The fight was broken up by other participants, and Mustapha left the scene.
Several hours later, Mustapha returned to the 8900 block of South Brandon, where he found Ray standing near the Germano Millgate public housing complex. Witnesses reported that Mustapha approached Ray under the pretense of asking for change for a $10 bill. When Ray reached into his pocket, Mustapha pulled out a gun and shot him multiple times at close range, hitting him four times in the chest, four times in the abdomen, and five times in his extremities. Ray was taken to Trinity Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:27 p.m.
Following the shooting, multiple witnesses identified Mustapha as the shooter. A warrant for his arrest was issued on July 1, 2016. Investigators discovered that Mustapha had fled Illinois and was later apprehended on August 1, 2016, in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, by the FBI and the Minneapolis Violent Crimes Task Force. Mustapha was extradited to Chicago, where he faced charges of first-degree murder. During a court hearing, Judge James Brown ordered Mustapha to be held without bond.
