Alberto Rios, a 20-year-old male from Villa Park, Illinois, tragically lost his life on May 6, 2017, in Addison, Illinois. The incident occurred at the intersection of Elizabeth Drive and Denise Court, where police responded to a call of shots fired. Upon arrival, they found a vehicle crashed into a tree with Alberto Rios and Kevin Bustos, a 17-year-old male from Addison, inside and unresponsive.
Both victims were transported to local hospitals and pronounced dead from gunshot wounds.
The investigation revealed that prior to the incident, Alberto Rios had an altercation with Jorge Vargas, a 20-year-old male from Addison. The argument escalated when Rios fired gunshots into the air before leaving the scene. He then left threatening messages on a mutual friend's phone, indicating his intention to return and cause harm. Approximately 20 to 30 minutes later, Rios returned to the location in a car driven by Kevin Bustos. As they arrived, Vargas, who was waiting at a third-floor window, opened fire on the vehicle, resulting in the deaths of both Rios and Bustos.
Jorge Vargas was apprehended and charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Alberto Rios and Kevin Bustos. He was also charged with three counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of a controlled substance. Vargas initially faced a bail set at $4 million and later pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison, with 12.5 years for each count to be served consecutively.
