Kia Johnson, a 30-year-old African American woman, tragically lost her life on June 5, 2017, in Joliet, Illinois. The incident occurred in her Evergreen Terrace apartment, where she was found with a bullet wound to her head. Her boyfriend, Jasper Johnson, was present at the scene and admitted to accidentally shooting her. He was immediately arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter.
Jasper Johnson, who was 31 years old at the time, claimed that he was intoxicated and playing
with a partially loaded revolver when the incident occurred. Despite Kia Johnson's pleas for him to stop, he manipulated the gun, spinning the cylinder, cocking the hammer, and ultimately pulling the trigger. The bullet struck Kia Johnson in the left side of her head, leading to her being pronounced brain dead shortly after the incident. She succumbed to her injuries two and a half days later at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center.
