Flack, who was born on May 30, 1974, in Kankakee, Illinois, was an independent landscaper and a member of the American Pool Players Association. He was married to Leah Hanley and had a daughter, Brianna Flack, and a stepson, Anthony Perkinton.

McGauley, a 47-year-old white male from Glen Carbon, was convicted of first-degree murder and domestic battery. Witnesses testified that McGauley became enraged when Flack intervened while McGauley was beating his wife, Mary McGauley. During the altercation, McGauley retrieved a firearm from his home and shot Flack five times.
McGauley had a history of domestic violence, with multiple police reports documenting incidents of abuse and threats against his wife. Despite these reports, there were no convictions prior to the murder. McGauley was sentenced to 60 years in prison for the murder of Steven W. Flack. The court heard testimony about McGauley's violent behavior and his attempts to manipulate and control his wife, which ultimately led to the fatal confrontation with Flack.
