Lonnell Holmes, a 24-year-old African American male, was tragically shot and killed on October 22, 2017, in the Austin neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. Holmes was found with gunshot wounds to the head and lower back. The incident occurred around 8:40 p.m. in the 1000 block of North Lavergne Avenue. According to Cook County prosecutors, the motive behind the shooting was a personal dispute between Holmes and the alleged shooter, Terrance Johnson, a 40-year-old African American male.
Holmes had reportedly taunted Johnson about the murder of Johnson's teenage son, which led to the fatal confrontation.
Terrance Johnson was arrested shortly after the shooting. Witnesses at the scene identified Johnson as the shooter and pointed him out to the police when he returned to the area. Johnson was found in a nearby house and was taken into custody. During the investigation, Johnson admitted to the shooting in a taped statement to detectives. Evidence collected included a flannel shirt Johnson was wearing at the time of his arrest, which had traces of gunpowder on it.
Johnson was charged with first-degree murder and was ordered held without bond. His criminal history revealed multiple felony convictions, and he had been paroled the previous year on a drug charge. Johnson's lawyer described him as a self-employed mechanic with a 10-year-old daughter and two teenage children.
Lonnell Holmes was a graduate of Orr High School and had attended Malcolm X College. He was employed at Walmart at the time of his death. The case against Johnson proceeded through the legal system, with the prosecution presenting evidence of the motive and Johnson's admission of guilt.
