Johnny Lovett, a 60-year-old African American man from East St. Louis, Illinois, was tragically murdered on November 24, 2017. Lovett, who was born on August 11, 1957, in St. Louis, Missouri, was a well-respected member of his community and a long-time member of the Ironworkers Local #392. On the day of his death, Lovett was found in his truck, which had rolled into the woods and caught fire after striking a tree. The discovery was made by Centreville police following several 911 calls reporting a body burning in a vehicle.
The investigation revealed that Lovett had stopped his vehicle to talk to a group of four young men, at least one of whom he knew. It is believed that robbery was the motive behind the shooting. Keundray Kilpatrick, a 21-year-old man from Centreville, was identified as the shooter. Kilpatrick shot Lovett multiple times, causing his truck to roll into the woods and catch fire. Kilpatrick was later arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
In January 2019, Kilpatrick pleaded guilty to the murder of Johnny Lovett. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison, with the requirement to serve 100% of his sentence.
