On August 18, 2014, the body of Rayshawn Gardner, a 38-year-old African-American male, was discovered in a vacant field in San Bernardino, California. The body was found in the 1100 block of East Third Street around 8 p.m. by a passerby.

The discovery prompted an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding Gardner's death. It was determined that Gardner had been shot to death, leading authorities to classify the incident as a homicide.
