Miguel Islas, a 28-year-old Hispanic male, was tragically shot and killed on January 11, 2018, in the Vittum Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side of Chicago, Illinois. The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. in the 4900 block of South Cicero Avenue. According to authorities, Islas was involved in an argument with a 19-year-old man named Lewis Pelayo, who also lived in the neighborhood. During the altercation, Pelayo fired six to seven bullets, striking Islas in the chest.
Islas was immediately transported to Holy Cross Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Following the incident, Lewis Pelayo was charged with a felony count of first-degree murder in connection with the death of Miguel Islas. Pelayo was apprehended the next day after a brief attempt to evade arrest. When officers tried to take him into custody, Pelayo fled and continued to resist arrest until he was finally detained around 3:30 p.m. in the 5600 block of South Archer Avenue. At the time of his arrest, Pelayo was found in possession of a handgun, cocaine, and marijuana. Consequently, he faced additional charges, including felony counts of aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of between 100 and 500 grams of marijuana, along with three misdemeanor counts of resisting or obstructing a peace officer.
Pelayo was denied bond at his initial court appearance and was scheduled to return to court on February 9, 2018. The case drew significant attention due to the violent nature of the crime and the young age of both the victim and the suspect. The investigation into the murder of Miguel Islas highlighted the ongoing issues of gun violence and drug-related crimes in Chicago, particularly in neighborhoods like Vittum Park.
