Robert L. James, a 63-year-old retired teacher from Aurora, Illinois, was found dead on April 14, 2018, from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. James, who had worked as a math teacher at West Aurora High School until his retirement in 2014, was facing multiple felony charges related to child pornography. He was accused of producing and possessing pornographic images of children younger than 13, as well as indecent solicitation and sexual exploitation of a child.
James was initially arrested in January 2016 and charged with two counts of producing child pornography, six counts of possession of child pornography, indecent solicitation of a child, and sexual exploitation of a child. He was released on bond shortly after his arrest. However, he failed to appear in court for a hearing in February 2018, leading to a warrant being issued for his arrest.
The body of Robert L. James was discovered by two men in a field in the 100 block of W. Indian Trail around 1:30 p.m. The Kane County Coroner's Office conducted an autopsy, but the final cause of death was not determined pending toxicology tests. The case remained under investigation, but authorities concluded that James had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
There were no arrests, suspects, or ongoing litigations related to his death, as it was ruled a suicide. The investigation into the child pornography charges against James was separate from the investigation into his death.
