Jerry McCray Jr., a 22-year-old African American male, was fatally shot on January 13, 2019, in Roselle, Illinois. The incident occurred in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Springhill Drive. First responders arrived at the scene around 4:10 p.m. after receiving a call about a person down in the parking lot. They found McCray lying on the ground, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was transported to Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 5 p.m.
The investigation revealed that McCray had been shot eight times in the abdomen, chest, and arms while sitting in the backseat of a car. The shooter, identified as 25-year-old Brandon J. Foster, allegedly pulled out a .45-caliber handgun and fired at McCray without provocation. Foster was arrested in Nashville, Tennessee, after a combined investigation by Roselle police, the DuPage County Major Crimes Task Force, the U.S. Secret Service, Nashville police, and other agencies. He was charged with first-degree murder and held on a $3 million bail.
Authorities believe the shooting was an isolated incident and do not consider it a threat to the public. The motive for the shooting remains unclear, but it is known that McCray, Foster, and another man had gathered to smoke marijuana in the car before the shooting occurred. Foster's next court appearance was scheduled for February 25, 2019. The case continues to be investigated by local and federal law enforcement agencies.
