Marcel Whitfield, a 32-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on April 7, 2019, in Decatur, Illinois. Despite undergoing surgery at Decatur Memorial Hospital, Marcel succumbed to his injuries after going into cardiac arrest.

The investigation into Marcel Whitfield's death led to the arrest of Cody Burries, a 29-year-old male. Burries was apprehended in Tennessee in May 2019, a month after the shooting. He was charged with second-degree murder and later pled guilty to the charge as part of a plea agreement. In June 2020, Burries was sentenced to 18 years in prison, followed by two years of parole. He was credited for the time he had already served from his arrest until his sentencing.
