Tory Dukes, a 32-year-old African American man, was found shot to death on September 3, 2019, in the Gresham neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago. Officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert around 1:15 a.m. in the 8500 block of South Aberdeen Street and discovered Dukes unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Cook County medical examiner's office ruled his death a homicide.

Dukes was the father of a 4-year-old boy, Tory'on Dukes, who was tragically killed in a separate shooting incident in Gary, Indiana, later that year. Tory'on was sleeping in bed with his mother when shots were fired into their home, killing the child and grazing the face of his 27-year-old mother. The mother, who was three months pregnant at the time, survived the attack. The Gary police are investigating the shooting, and it is unclear whether it was a targeted act.
