Jamini Sutton, a 15-year-old African American boy from Hazel Crest, Illinois, tragically lost his life on November 20, 2019. The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. at the intersection of 171st Street and Park Avenue. Jamini was a passenger in a vehicle stopped at a traffic light when another vehicle pulled up alongside and someone inside opened fire. Jamini was struck in the head and was immediately transported to the University of Chicago Ingalls Hospital in Harvey.
Due to the severity of his injuries, he was later airlifted to Stroger Hospital in Chicago, where he was pronounced dead the following day at 5:30 p.m. An autopsy confirmed that Jamini's death was a homicide.
The shooting was described by Hazel Crest police as a "targeted attack." Another male passenger in the vehicle suffered a graze wound but managed to flee on foot, while the female driver and another female passenger were unharmed. Despite the targeted nature of the attack, no arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing. The South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force is assisting Hazel Crest police in their efforts to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
