Terrence M. Maggette, a 41-year-old African American male, was fatally shot on February 22, 2020, outside a convenience store in the Chatham neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. The incident occurred around 10:41 p.m. in the 8200 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue. According to the Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office, Maggette was inside the store when he fired through the door at someone approaching the store.
It remains unclear whether the individual was hit, but they returned fire when Maggette exited the store, striking him multiple times on the sidewalk. Maggette was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 11:19 p.m. An autopsy confirmed that he died from his gunshot wounds, and his death was ruled a homicide.
The person who shot Maggette fled the scene in a gold SUV. A weapon was recovered at the scene, and Area South detectives are investigating the case. As of now, there have been no arrests or suspects identified in connection with Maggette's death. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
