Vernardo Jones Jr., a 14-year-old African American boy, was tragically killed on July 4, 2020, in Chicago, Illinois. Around 11:35 p.m., four males approached the crowd and began shooting. Vernardo was struck in the back and was later pronounced dead at Comer Children’s Hospital.
The shooting resulted in the deaths of three other male victims: Ernest Franklin, 30, Cartier Tivon Warner, 26, and Andre Parnell Osborne, 53. Additionally, several others were injured, including an 11-year-old boy with a graze wound to the ankle and a 15-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. The suspects fled the scene, and no arrests have been made.
The FBI has named Vernardo Jones Jr.'s murder as the first major case targeted by Operation Legend in Chicago. This initiative aims to bring additional federal resources to assist in solving violent crimes. Despite the efforts, no arrests have been made, and the FBI continues to seek information from the public. A $25,000 reward has been offered for information leading to the identification and arrest of the suspects.
