On that fateful day, Dustin Cooper, a 16-year-old from Danville, Illinois, contacted Wyatt to purchase marijuana and cannabis-related products. Cooper, armed with a handgun, arrived at Wyatt's home with four other teenagers. During the robbery, Wyatt, who was also armed, was shot multiple times.
He sustained gunshot wounds to both legs and was ultimately shot in the chest while lying on the ground. Another teenager, Clayvonte Sloan, 16, from Danville, Illinois, was also shot in the lower abdomen during the incident. Both Wyatt and Clayvonte succumbed to their injuries.
The investigation into Wyatt Bailey's death led to significant legal proceedings. Dustin Cooper was the first of four individuals to be tried and sentenced for the murders. In July 2022, a Vermilion County jury found Cooper guilty of first-degree murder and armed robbery. He was subsequently sentenced to 40 years in prison.
