According to reports, Davis and another 17-year-old boy met with Robert Chatman-Jones, a 20-year-old man from Bellwood, and Desire Gray, a 19-year-old woman from Aurora, to sell a gun. During the transaction, Davis informed Chatman-Jones that the payment was short, leading to a struggle between the two. Chatman-Jones then allegedly fired a gun into the car, striking Davis in the head and hand, and injuring the other teen in the leg. Both victims were transported to a nearby hospital, where Davis was later transferred to Loyola Hospital and subsequently died from his injuries.
Following the incident, Chatman-Jones and Gray fled the scene but were apprehended the next day in the parking lot of an apartment complex in Aurora. Both suspects were charged with first-degree murder, aggravated battery, and attempted armed robbery. The DuPage County State's Attorney, Robert Berlin, commended the Naperville Police Department for their swift action in taking the suspects into custody within 24 hours of the murder.
