Benjamin Cleveland Keith, a 33-year-old white male, served as the Sheriff of Murray County, Georgia. On July 23, 1907, Sheriff Keith was fatally wounded while attempting to apprehend a fugitive wanted for the murder of a boy in neighboring Fannin County. During the confrontation, the fugitive opened fire, striking Sheriff Keith in the abdomen.
