Guard James Walter Johnson, a 28-year-old white male, tragically died on June 16, 1908, in Bibb County, Georgia. Johnson was serving as a guard for the Bibb County Sheriff's Office and was supervising a chain gang on Houston Road, approximately 13 miles outside of Macon. On that fateful day, Johnson was climbing into a wagon when his double-barreled shotgun accidentally discharged. The trigger caught on a wheel spoke, causing the gun to fire.
