In the confines of the Bibb County jail, a violent altercation erupted on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, leading to the death of 22-year-old Breele Jahiem Johnson. The male inmate was fatally stabbed just two days after his birthday. The incident, which occurred in the D-block of the downtown Macon facility, also left four other inmates injured.
The altercation reportedly began when a group of five to eight inmates from cell block C managed to bypass a security door, gaining access to cell block D where they initiated the attack. Surveillance footage captured the brief but brutal assault, which lasted less than two minutes. The assailants reportedly attempted to conceal their identities during the attack. Authorities later recovered several improvised weapons, including shanks.
Johnson, along with two other inmates, was transported to a local hospital for treatment. However, he was pronounced dead by medical staff. The other two hospitalized inmates were listed in stable condition, while the remaining two injured individuals received medical care within the jail. At the time of his death, Johnson was being held on charges of aggravated assault and theft by receiving stolen property related to a 2023 drive-by shooting.
In the wake of the deadly fight, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to assist the Bibb County Sheriff's Office with the investigation. The section of the jail where the attack occurred was placed on lockdown as authorities began interviewing every inmate present in the cell block. The incident brought renewed scrutiny to the conditions at the aging and overcrowded jail, with community members and civil rights groups having recently protested the facility's safety and sanitation.
Following a thorough investigation into the circumstances of Johnson's death, authorities announced in July 2025 that nine inmates were facing charges in connection with the fatal stabbing. The charges brought against the suspects included felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a prohibited item by an inmate.
