In the winter of 1910, the city of Tallapoosa, Georgia, lost a dedicated public servant in a sudden and violent manner. Marshal William Henry Maeger, a 53-year-old male, was shot and killed on Sunday, February 13th. His death occurred within the confines of the Old City Hall's basement, which housed the city jail. The Marshal had just completed an arrest and was in the process of jailing the individual when the situation turned fatal.
The events leading to the tragedy unfolded as Marshal
Maeger escorted the man he had taken into custody to the jail. Upon their arrival, the suspect, in a sudden move, revealed a concealed handgun. Before the Marshal could react, the man fired, mortally wounding him. The life of the dedicated lawman, who was a husband and a father to six children, was cut short in an instant.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the 42-year-old suspect fled the scene and went into hiding at his residence. However, law enforcement officers were able to locate and apprehend him. He was subsequently put on trial for the murder of Marshal Maeger. A conviction was secured, and the man was sentenced to prison for his crime. He was later granted parole and released on July 19, 1927.
