On a tragic evening in Muscogee, Georgia, the lives of Marion Jones Miller, a Black female, and her companion, Army Captain Patrick A. Doe, were violently cut short on April 13, 1974. The couple was ambushed in Captain Doe's car, a brutal act orchestrated by a man with a chilling motive. The perpetrator was identified as Joseph Holcombe Mulligan, the brother of Captain Doe's estranged wife.
Mulligan's primary goal was to prevent his brother-in-law from finalizing his divorce, which would have removed his sister as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy.
To carry out his deadly plan, Mulligan enlisted the help of a friend from the Marine Corps, Timothy A. Helms, promising him $1,000 for his assistance. The two men traveled to Columbus, Georgia, and spent the night before the murders in a hotel under false names. The following day, they met with Captain Doe. Later that evening, with Mulligan and Helms in the back seat, Captain Doe drove to pick up Marion Jones Miller. As they were leaving, Mulligan, who was seated directly behind his brother-in-law, shot Captain Doe once in the head. When Marion Jones Miller screamed, Mulligan turned the weapon on her, shooting her multiple times to eliminate her as a witness.
After the murders, Mulligan and Helms fled the scene, disposing of evidence as they went. However, their attempts to evade justice were ultimately unsuccessful. A crucial piece of evidence, a fingerprint found on Captain Doe's car, was matched to Mulligan. The investigation led to both men, and Timothy Helms was granted immunity in exchange for his testimony against Mulligan. Helms provided a detailed account of the planning and execution of the murders, which became a cornerstone of the prosecution's case.
Joseph Holcombe Mulligan was arrested and stood trial for the murders of Marion Jones Miller and Captain Patrick A. Doe. He was found guilty on all counts and initially sentenced to death for both murders. His death sentence for the murder of Captain Doe was later overturned on a legal technicality, but the death sentence for the murder of Marion Jones Miller was upheld through numerous appeals. After exhausting all his legal options, Joseph Holcombe Mulligan was executed by electrocution on May 15, 1987, for the murder of Marion Jones Miller.
