Lee Johnson, initiated an escape attempt. It was later revealed that Johnson's girlfriend, Sandra Goodwin, had managed to smuggle a. 38 caliber handgun to him. During the escape, Johnson fatally shot Deputy Elbert in the head. After the shooting, Johnson fled the scene in a stolen patrol car, prompting a massive manhunt involving numerous law enforcement agencies. The stolen vehicle was later found abandoned in the neighboring Jefferson County, leading authorities to believe Johnson was still in the area.
