In the late hours of November 16, 1993, the life of 21-year-old Alicia Lynn Yarbrough, a Caucasian female, was tragically cut short in Spalding, Georgia. At the time, Yarbrough was in a sporadic romantic relationship with Willie James Pye, but was living with another man, Charles Puckett. Pye, along with two companions, Chester Adams and 15-year-old Anthony Freeman, planned to rob Puckett, who Pye had heard received money from a lawsuit settlement. Pye was also reportedly angered that Puckett had signed the birth certificate of a child Pye claimed was his own. The three men purchased a. 22 pistol and, after leaving a party just before midnight, proceeded to the house where Yarbrough was alone with her baby.
Wearing ski masks, the men forced their way into the home after Yarbrough saw Pye trying to open a window and screamed. They held her at gunpoint, and when they found no money, they stole a ring and a necklace from her. The men then abducted Yarbrough, leaving her infant child alone in the house. They drove to a nearby motel, where Pye rented a room under an alias. Inside the motel room, all three men raped Yarbrough at gunpoint. After attempting to wipe away their fingerprints, they forced Yarbrough back into a car and drove to a deserted dirt road. There, Pye ordered her out of the car, made her lie face down, and shot her three times, ending her life. Her body was discovered a few hours later, on November 17, 1993.
The investigation quickly led to the arrest of Pye, Adams, and Freeman. While Pye and Adams initially denied their involvement, the 15-year-old, Anthony Freeman, confessed and implicated the other two men. Freeman's confession and his agreement to testify for the prosecution were pivotal in the case against Pye. In exchange for his testimony, Freeman reached a plea agreement. On February 7, 1994, a grand jury in Spalding County indicted Willie James Pye on charges of malice murder, felony murder, kidnapping with bodily injury, armed robbery, burglary, rape, and aggravated sodomy.
In June 1996, a jury found Willie James Pye guilty of malice murder, kidnapping with bodily injury, armed robbery, rape, and burglary. The jury recommended the death penalty for the murder. In addition to the death sentence, Pye received three life sentences plus twenty years to be served consecutively. Chester Adams pleaded guilty in April 1997 to malice murder, kidnapping with bodily injury, armed robbery, rape, and aggravated sodomy and was given five consecutive life sentences. After decades of appeals, Willie James Pye was executed by lethal injection on March 20, 2024.
