On a December morning in 1994, in Gainesville, Georgia, the life of Barbara Ann Young, a 26-year-old female, was tragically cut short in a violent outburst that also claimed the life of her friend, Tonya Woods, who was 21. The horrific events unfolded inside Young's home, where a recent breakup escalated into a double homicide, leaving a lasting scar on their families and the community.
The day of the incident, December 29, 1994, Barbara Ann Young was at her home with her two young
children and two friends, Tonya Woods and LaToya Horne. Her ex-boyfriend, Scotty Garnell Morrow, with whom she had recently ended a relationship due to his abusive behavior, arrived at the residence. An argument ensued, during which Woods intervened and told Morrow to leave, stating that Young no longer wanted anything to do with him. Enraged, Morrow produced a handgun and shot Woods and Horne.
As chaos erupted, Young fled to a bedroom, but Morrow pursued her, ultimately shooting her in the head in the hallway. The brutal attack was witnessed by Young's five-year-old son, who was hiding in a nearby room. Morrow then returned to the kitchen and fatally shot Woods. Horne, despite being severely wounded, managed to escape and seek help from a neighbor.
Scotty Garnell Morrow was quickly identified as the assailant and was apprehended by law enforcement within hours of the murders. He confessed to the shootings, and the murder weapon was recovered from his yard. In 1999, a Hall County jury convicted Morrow of the murders of Barbara Ann Young and Tonya Woods and sentenced him to death. Following his conviction, Morrow spent nearly two decades on death row, during which his legal team filed numerous appeals. After exhausting all his appeals, Scotty Garnell Morrow was executed by lethal injection on May 2, 2019. Before his execution, Morrow issued an apology to the families of his victims.
