In the quiet town of Santa Claus, Georgia, a horrific tragedy unfolded on December 4, 1997, forever staining its festive name with the memory of a brutal crime. Eight-year-old Bryant Edward Daniels, a young boy, was among the four family members who lost their lives in a violent home invasion. The tranquility of their one-story brick home was shattered when an intruder broke in as the family slept.
The perpetrator, later identified as 20-year-old Jerry Scott Heidler, had a connection to the family. Months prior to the incident, Bryant's father, Danny Daniels, had a conversation with Heidler regarding his developing relationship with their 16-year-old daughter, Jessica. Following this discussion, Heidler had ceased visiting the Daniels' home. On that fateful December night, Heidler returned, armed with a shotgun he took from the family's gun cabinet.
Heidler first went to the master bedroom where he shot and killed Danny and Kim Daniels. He then proceeded to the room where young Bryant slept and fatally shot him. His sister, Jessica, was also killed by a shotgun blast to the back of her head in her parents' bedroom. In the aftermath of the killings, Heidler kidnapped three other children from the home, two of whom were the Daniels' daughters and one a foster child. The kidnapped children were later found unharmed on the side of a road in a neighboring county by a farmer who alerted the authorities. Two other foster children, a 10-month-old and a 4-year-old, were found physically unharmed inside the house.
Law enforcement swiftly identified Jerry Scott Heidler as the suspect and arrested him at a relative's house approximately seven hours after the discovery of the bodies. He was subsequently charged with four counts of malice murder, kidnapping, and burglary. During his trial, the jury found Heidler guilty on all counts. On September 4, 1999, Jerry Scott Heidler was sentenced to death for the murders of Bryant, Jessica, Danny, and Kim Daniels. He remains on death row at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification State Prison.
