In the spring of 2007, the life of 19-year-old Trae Allen was tragically cut short. An African American male, Allen was discovered on May 21, 2007, inside a townhouse located in the 5200 block of Brook Way in Columbia, Georgia. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his head. The residence where his body was found belonged to 23-year-old Charles David Richardson IV, a man with a significant criminal history. Allen was a close friend of Richardson's younger brother, William Arin Richardson. Friends had reportedly warned Allen, who was visiting from Atlanta, about the potential dangers of associating with the Richardson brothers.
The investigation into Allen's death quickly focused on Charles Richardson. At the time of the discovery of Allen's body, Richardson was already a person of interest in a separate murder case. He was suspected in the shooting death of Alevtina Zhilina, a 7-Eleven clerk who was killed during an attempted robbery in April of that year. Witnesses came forward stating they had heard Richardson openly boast about the killing of the clerk. This information, combined with evidence gathered in the Allen case, led to Richardson being charged with both murders.
During the course of the investigation, several individuals provided statements to detectives that implicated Richardson in both killings. One witness, Kenneth Wayne Sledd, confessed to assisting Richardson by driving him to a hideout and helping him dispose of bloody clothing. Another witness recalled hearing Richardson discussing the murders while on a bus. Despite attempts by his defense to argue he was not criminally responsible due to mental illness, Richardson was ultimately found competent to stand trial. The legal proceedings were set to determine whether he would face life in prison or the death penalty for his crimes.
