On a quiet evening in Sparta, Georgia, the life of 31-year-old Dedria DeShay was tragically cut short in a violent intrusion that also claimed the life of 33-year-old Darryl Scott. The double homicide occurred on September 11, 2011, sending shockwaves through the rural Hancock County community.
Responding to a call for help from someone inside the residence at 141 Tommie Lane, officers arrived to a grim scene between 9:00 and 9:30 p.m. Inside, they found DeShay and Scott suffering from gunshot wounds. Scott was initially conscious but succumbed to his injuries on the way to Oconee Regional Medical Center. The investigation into the deaths of Dedria DeShay, a female, and Darryl Scott pointed to a single suspect.
Authorities arrested Brandon Charleston, who was 19 years old at the time of the incident. A Hancock County grand jury indicted him on a total of seven charges. These included two counts of malice murder for the deaths of DeShay and Scott, and two counts of felony murder. He was also charged with the armed robbery of Scott, burglary of the residence, and aggravated assault for allegedly firing a pistol at DeShay's son, who managed to escape injury by taking cover in a bathtub.
The trial against Brandon Charleston commenced in August 2013 at the Baldwin County Courthouse. The prosecution was prepared to call over 40 witnesses to build its case against the teenager who was facing the possibility of life in prison without parole.
