In the early morning hours of October 23, 2011, a sense of duty led to a tragic end for a veteran law enforcement officer. Deputy James 'JD' Paugh, a 47-year-old male who had served with the Richmond County Sheriff's Office for 17 years, was on his way home after his shift. As he traveled on I-520 near Gordon Highway, he noticed a vehicle pulled over on the side of the road and, believing the occupants might be in distress, he stopped to assist.
