In the early morning hours of May 28, 2014, the quiet of a Hoschton, Georgia neighborhood was shattered by a 911 call from a 13-year-old girl. Inside her home on Platinum Court, her mother, 30-year-old Melissa Gail Kimsey, had been shot multiple times. When Gwinnett County police arrived at approximately 4:30 a.m., they found Melissa deceased.
Not far from the tragic scene, officers located Melissa's husband, 31-year-old Rodney Kimsey II.
He was found acting erratically near a neighboring house. Due to his behavior, he was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. The couple's teenage daughter, who had made the emergency call, was physically unharmed.
Following the initial investigation, authorities identified Rodney Kimsey II as the primary suspect in his wife's death. While he was still at the hospital, warrants were issued for his arrest on charges of felony murder and aggravated assault. Upon his release from medical care, he was to be taken into police custody. The case drew wider attention when it was featured in an HBO documentary about gun deaths.
