In the summer of 2014, a planned drug deal in Atlanta, Georgia, took a fatal turn, ending the life of 29-year-old Claude Dickerson. An African American male from Montgomery, Alabama, Dickerson was in the city on July 26th for what he believed was a transaction arranged by Ricky Hudson with Jerome Banks, Sr., and Terry Denham. However, Banks and Denham had no intention of selling drugs; their actual plan was to rob both Dickerson and Hudson. To carry out their scheme, they enlisted the help of John Husband and Janorris Spears.
The group met at an apartment complex in the 600 block of University Avenue. In a stairwell, the situation quickly escalated when Banks pulled a gun on Dickerson. Simultaneously, Husband and another man, alleged to be Spears, ambushed Hudson, holding him at gunpoint. While Hudson was being robbed and forced into an apartment, from which he managed to escape by jumping out of a window, Banks shot and killed Dickerson in the stairwell. Dickerson was found with a gunshot wound to the back of the head and was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into Claude Dickerson's murder led to the arrests of four individuals. Terry Denham was the first to be taken into custody in early August 2014, followed by Jerome Banks, who turned himself in on August 11th. John Husband was arrested on August 14th, and the final suspect, 28-year-old Janorris Spears, was apprehended on August 21st. All four men faced murder charges.
The legal proceedings that followed revealed the complexities of the case. Janorris Spears, who had a prior criminal record, was ultimately acquitted of malice murder and felony murder. However, he was convicted of criminal attempt to commit armed robbery, armed robbery, false imprisonment, aggravated assault, and conspiracy to commit armed robbery. For his involvement in the events that led to Dickerson's death, Spears was sentenced to 30 years in prison. During the investigation, authorities also discovered a coded letter in Spears' jail cell containing a death threat against a jail employee, highlighting the challenges law enforcement faced in the case.
