In the quiet town of Toccoa, Georgia, the community was shaken by the tragic death of 46-year-old Kimberly Gail Pitts Lanier, a local business owner. On the morning of Monday, September 29, 2014, a 15-year-old boy placed a call to 911, reporting that someone had been shot at their residence on Prather Bridge Road. When authorities arrived, they found Lanier inside her home with a fatal gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene by the Stephens County Coroner.
The devastating event sent ripples of shock and sorrow through the close-knit community, where Lanier was known as the owner of the Cutting Edge Day Spa and as the wife of the Shiloh Volunteer Fire Department chief.
The investigation into Lanier's death quickly focused on her 15-year-old son. Following an intensive investigation by local authorities and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the teen was taken into custody. Investigators executed a search warrant at the family's home, gathering and processing evidence late into the evening. The boy, who was reported to have mental challenges, made a statement to the GBI and was subsequently charged with malice murder in connection with his mother's shooting death. He was booked at the Stephens County Jail before being transferred to a Regional Youth Detention Center.
