On the evening of January 10, 2015, in Atlanta's Castleberry Hill neighborhood, 26-year-old Donovan 'Big Nut' Thomas, an African American male, was standing outside a barbershop on McDaniel Street when he was fatally wounded in a drive-by shooting. Two other individuals, another man and a 14-year-old boy, were also injured in the attack but survived. Thomas was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body.
The shooting was not believed to be random, with investigators suggesting that Thomas was the intended target.
The investigation into Donovan Thomas's murder soon became intertwined with a much larger criminal case involving the Atlanta-based street gang Young Slime Life. Thomas was identified as a member of a rival gang, the Inglewood Family Bloods. Prosecutors alleged that his killing was a gang-related assassination. Several individuals associated with YSL were eventually indicted in connection with the murder. Among those charged were Deamonte Kendrick, also known as the rapper Yak Gotti, and Shannon Stillwell.
The legal proceedings that followed were lengthy and complex, forming a significant part of the highly publicized YSL RICO trial. The prosecution presented evidence and witness testimony in an attempt to prove that Kendrick and Stillwell were responsible for Thomas's death. However, after a long and arduous trial, a jury found both Deamonte Kendrick and Shannon Stillwell not guilty of the murder of Donovan Thomas in December 2024. Stillwell was, however, convicted on a separate gun possession charge.
While the trial for Kendrick and Stillwell concluded with an acquittal on the murder charges, the pursuit of justice in Donovan Thomas's case is not entirely over. Another suspect, Demise McMullen, who was also charged in connection with the killing, rejected a plea deal offered by prosecutors. His case is expected to go to trial, representing another chapter in the ongoing legal saga surrounding the death of Donovan Thomas.
