In the quiet community of Mount Airy, Georgia, a long-running dispute between two neighbors culminated in a tragic and violent end. On a Wednesday afternoon in March 2015, the serene neighborhood on Key Road was shattered by the sounds of gunfire, leaving two men dead. The victims were identified as 77-year-old Hershel Key and his 68-year-old neighbor, Ronald Ramey, who lived across the street from each other.
Authorities were first alerted to the unfolding tragedy when a call for
assistance was made from Ramey's residence. Upon their arrival, they discovered Ramey suffering from a gunshot wound. He was immediately transported to Habersham Medical Center for treatment but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The investigation then led deputies across the street to Key's home.
Behind his house, near a shed, law enforcement found Hershel Key, who was already deceased. It was apparent that he too had sustained a gunshot wound. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to assist the Habersham County Sheriff's Office with the investigation. For a time, the question of who shot whom remained unanswered as agents processed the scene and conducted interviews.
The investigation eventually revealed the incident to be a murder-suicide. According to the Habersham County Sheriff, Hershel Key used a. 30-30 rifle to shoot his neighbor, Ronald Ramey, from his own front yard while Ramey was working on a fence. Following this fatal act, Key then took a 12-gauge shotgun, walked to his backyard, and took his own life. The case was closed with no arrests made, as the sole suspect was also deceased.
