In the early hours of April 29, 2015, a domestic dispute in Dearing, Georgia, tragically ended the life of 51-year-old Bobbie R. Blackmon. The incident unfolded at her residence on Randall Road, where she lived with her husband, their daughter, and her grandchildren. The night before, Bobbie and her husband, Danny Blackmon, Jr., had been embroiled in an argument over photos on her cell phone.
The disagreement escalated, with Danny consuming pills and a bottle of cold medicine while crying and yelling at his wife.
The tense atmosphere in the home prompted Bobbie to ask her niece to drive her to her mother's house. Later that night, around 4:00 a.m., a gunshot shattered the quiet. Bobbie's daughter, Leigh Ann Hathcock, and her niece, Christina Turner, heard the shot and Danny's cries for help. They rushed into the bedroom to find Bobbie slumped on the bed with a severe gunshot wound to her neck.
Despite the devastating scene, Bobbie was still breathing. With Danny's help, her daughter and niece managed to get her into a vehicle to meet emergency responders at the end of their long driveway. She was then transported to Georgia Regents Medical Center in Augusta, where she was pronounced dead.
Responding McDuffie County Sheriff's deputies and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation immediately began a homicide investigation. Danny E. Blackmon Jr., who was 48 years old at the time, was arrested and subsequently charged with Murder, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime, and Possession of Methamphetamine. During the investigation, Danny claimed he had not intended to shoot his wife, stating he was trying to shoot himself. A search of his person revealed he was in possession of 1.69 grams of methamphetamine.
On June 13, 2016, a McDuffie County grand jury indicted Danny Blackmon, Jr. on charges of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and possession of methamphetamine. In March 2017, a jury found him not guilty of malice murder but convicted him on all other charges. His conviction for felony murder in connection with the shooting death of his wife was later affirmed by the Supreme Court of Georgia in June 2019, cementing the legal conclusion to a tragic case of domestic violence.
