On a crisp Halloween night in 2010, a group of friends, including 19-year-old Darrell Buroughs, was making their way across a footbridge into the Baltimore Highlands. The night was filled with the usual festive spirit, but the atmosphere would soon take a dark and tragic turn. An altercation erupted, shattering the peace of the evening and forever altering the lives of those present. During the dispute, another 19-year-old named Sterlin Matthews produced a firearm and began shooting at the group of friends.
As chaos ensued, Darrell, a young African-American man, was struck in the back by the gunfire. The shot proved to be fatal, and Darrell Buroughs tragically lost his life on October 25, 2010. Two other teenagers who were with Darrell at the time were also wounded in the shooting, their Halloween night turning into a scene of violence and loss. The festive occasion was irrevocably marred by the senseless act of violence that cut short a young life and injured others.
In the aftermath of the shooting, an investigation was launched, which led to the identification and arrest of Sterlin Matthews. He was subsequently charged for his role in the tragic incident. After legal proceedings, Matthews was convicted of second-degree murder for the death of Darrell Buroughs. In addition to the murder conviction, he was also found guilty on multiple counts of first-degree assault for the injuries sustained by the two other teenagers.
