In the summer of 2016, the life of 42-year-old Heather deAmber Martin Phillips was tragically cut short in what was determined to be a murder-suicide. On July 28, 2016, Heather, a pre-loader for UPS, was found deceased in her Gainesville, Georgia home in the Chicopee Village area. An investigation by the Hall County Sheriff's Office concluded that Heather was fatally shot by her husband, 45-year-old Robert Troy Phillips, who then used the firearm to take his own life.
Robert Troy Phillips, a 10-year Navy veteran who had served in the Persian Gulf War and Operation Iraqi Freedom, was a former candidate for the Hall County Commission. He and Heather had been married for nine years. The DeKalb County Medical Examiner's report confirmed that both individuals died from single gunshot wounds, with Troy Phillips identified as the shooter. The physical evidence at the scene supported the investigators' conclusions.
In the wake of the tragedy, Heather's family expressed their gratitude for the thorough investigation conducted by law enforcement. Her brother, Brannon Shane Martin, stated that the family hoped the official findings would quell the spread of rumors and misinformation that had circulated on social media. He also emphasized the importance of remembering Heather for the way she lived and highlighted the ongoing societal issue of domestic violence. There were no other suspects in the case, and with the perpetrator deceased, no arrests were made.
